Athens
2008-11-22
In Athens we had some problems finding a couch to surf (www.couchsurfing.com), so when we stubbornly arrived around 5.30 in the morning, got off the boat and found our way into the city centre; we still had no clue as to where we would be staying that night. (Never have this many problems finding a couch in Thessaloniki…)
Our friends from the WWOOF farm on Crete had told us about a cheap hostel, but when you want to stay for 3-4 nights, then ‘cheap’ per person per night, is somehow always more than you want to spend when you’re on a tight budget. =P
Luckily, our CS friends did not dissapoint; we found some really cool people -really- last minute.
George was really nice, came to meet us at the metro and took us back to his place where we made some pasta. Unfortunately we didn’t get to know him so well since he had some more people coming the next day and we couldn’t stay longer.
Elena saved us, so we didn’t have to leave after one night.
She was awsome; had a dutch-windmill-made-of-cheese fridgemagnet, as well as a scottish bagpiper. Talked a little in the kitchen while making.. more pasta! :D
Athens was gorgious!! Ruins eveywhere, especially around the Temple of Olympian Zeus and the Acropolis. Beautiful National Garden, and museums (etc.) are free on sundays!! so we had our little look around the Archeological museum etc.
The city itself was a strange thing; HUGE as i’ve never seen before… even looking from the top of the Acropolis, i couldn’t see anything but city blocks and skyy-scrapers as far as the eye could see.
Some slightly scary people walking around (sketchy), but you get that in any big city i suppose.
AH! We lost our camera :( :’(
That’s half of the pictures from our trip gone-ski :(
(The camera card was full too.. and we wanted to upload all the pics… but it was too little too late; no nothing)
Still, no use crying over spilt milk, we’ve got ourselves and eachother, and we’re having fun all the time; meeting really nice people.
See you all later!!!

Hello all,
on the road again, staying with couchsurfers.
OH, my, GOD.
Chocolate heaven has been found!!
Today we met up with two of the girls we were staying with in the WWOOFing place we just left, and basically just hung out.
We woke up after being able to properly sleep in for the first time in ages, went over to the place they were staying and had some grilled cheese sandwiches.
Then we headed out to check out the archeological museum (which was closed for rennovations) and the flea market (which was just not there).
So we finally decided on just sitting down in a cafe.
We got some INCREDIBLE waffles with chocolate and vanilla ice-cream, absolutely covered in chocolate sauce, it was oh so chocolaty/waffley goodness, and we played some cards there.
(which is not that weird here, we’ve seen people just hanging out in bars playing chess and backgammon)
DINNER TIME: the four of us headed out to the port around 5.30 to a cool restaurant Liz and Lucy (the other WWOOFers) had found the day before.
Between us, we ordered seven small plates of foods (all delicious) and two karafs of wine, and it all cost only $32!!! (amazed)
needless to say; we stuffed ourselves and greatly enjoyed ourselves while doing it.
After this we met up with an Aussie named David, who has apparently been traveling for 20 years!!!
He played us some music on his guitar and his friend played on a small three-stringed guitar-like-thing. A good Greek evening, with lots of drinks and snacks.
and then…
CHOCOLATE HEAVEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There’s this bar called “Utopia” that our CS hosts took us to, where practically the entire menu is chocolate (thus the nickname “the chocolate bar")
We had chocolate fondue with the complimentary plate of cookies,
it couldn’t have been better… unless the prices had gone down.
Now we are back in our hosts appartment, pregnant with FOODbabies (as Liz would say) and very ready to fall asleep.
so, GOODNIGHT y’all ;)
love,

WWOOFing with Manolis

Hello all,
crazy crazy crazy, internet access does not come easily to us these days, but that’ll just give me more stories to tell when i see you next ;)
Our second WWOOF experience ended today, as we just left the farm in Zimbragou, where we picked olives, cut brush and shovelled …compost.
What was cool about this place is that we weren’t the only WWOOFers there. There were 4 artsy Americans (2pairs) who were cool to hang out with. It made us follow the US elections a little bit more closely than I would have expected otherwise. OBAMA’s winning gave us the treat of a celebratory pumpkin pie (now nick-named obama-pie) which i happily copied the recipy for. (yumyumyum)
The actual work was less fun of course, but is was made interesting by the person who worked for ‘the boss’, his name was Thanasis, he was Albanian and he spoke no English at all, but we still managed lots of fun.
gotta go for now,
love

Thes-sa-lo-ni-ki!!!
Greece has finally come to us,
we took the train from Skopje (where we spent a very … scarily interesting night in the train station) to Thessaloniki, where after finding out that it was a beautiful city, and we were not meant to leave so easily, we met up with an incredibly nice couchsurfer (Matina our savior) who introduced us to loads of cool people.
we spent 3 nights in the city (25% students!!!)
sent a postcard to my lovely little niece, saw the truly cool bits of town, drank frappe, participated in a demonsration for immigrant rights, and finally left on a 28-hour boat-journey to Crete.
YIKES!!!
I would LOVE to tell you more about this magnificant city, (especially about its wonderful chocolate shops and student cafe lane, and the university of Aristoteles) but lately time seems to go contrary with me,
so i shall leave it for another time.
LOVE

last post before GREECE

Hello everyone,
tomoroww morning at 8, the time will have come…
I, Davida, and he, David, will be on our way to Greece :)
The next step in our adventure will have begun! The next WWOOF adres is waiting, which means more learning about organic farming and more meeting all sorts of wonderful people :)
I found that the family we stayed with in Zelezna Gora has really become dear to me, and i hope our next stop will be just as memorable.
When we got to Podgorica, Montenegro yesterday, we spent a whole 2 hours there before getting on the bus again and heading to Skopje, Macedonia.
Dubrovnik was beautiful and I’m ashamed to saw we did not see nearly enough of it. Hopefully the experience of sleeping under the old city-walls will be enough to hold us over till next time.
In Podgorica we cooked some dinner in the corner of the bus station (rice is our ever feithful friend) and had some security guards blow kisses at me. (made me laugh)
I’d love to tell you what Skopje is like, but that’s what we’re going to find out about now!!!
ciao,
