About Chad
The Republic of Chad lies in north central Africa measuring 1.284 sq km. Chad is sometimes refered to as the 'dead heart of Africa' because of its climactic conditions: it has broad, arid plains in center, desert in north, dry mountains in northwest, and tropical lowlands in south. Djourab Depression at 160 m is the lowest point while Emi Koussi at 3,415 m is the highest point in the country.
Only 3% of Chad is arable land and environment is hot and dry, with dusty winds in the north, periodic droughts, and locust plagues. Lake Chad is the most significant water body in the Sahel and once was the second-largest lake in Africa but has shrunk dramatically during the last few decades and is now down to less than 10% of its former size.
