About Democratic Republic Of Congo

The Democratic Republic of Congo is the third-largest country in Africa with a coastline of only 27km, at the outlet of the Congo River, which flows into the Atlantic. The country lies on the Equator and offers a broad set of geographical features, such as mountain ranges in the north and west, a vast central plain through which the Congo River flows, and the volcanoes and lakes of the Kivu region. There are extensive tropical rainforests on the western border with the Republic of Congo that contain great biodiversity, including many rare species like the mountain gorilla, okapi and white rhino.

The country has five national parks that are on the World Heritage list: the Garumba, Kahuzi-Biega, Salonga and Virunga National parks, and the Okapi Wildlife Reserve.
The highest altitudes are found along the eastern part of the country, on the edge of the Great African Rift Valley, with volcano’s and mountains of which Mt. Ruwenzori is the most notable (5,119 m).
