About Ethiopia
Ethiopia has a great diversity in landscape with a massive highland complex of mountains with mount Ras Dejen at 4,620 m as the highest point, and plateaus divided by the Great Rift Valley, which is surrounded by lowlands, steppes or semidesert. Lake Tana in the north, the source of the Blue Nile, has 37 islands many of which are supposed to have monasteries or churches with remains of ancient Ethiopian emperors and church treasures. The beautifull Simien Mountains National Park provide some fantastic hiking opportunities.
Ethiopia also has a rich cultural heritage, with some interesting destinations as Axum-home with its ancient tombs and stelea fields, Bahir Dar-near the source of the Blue Nile, the medieval city of Gondar with some of East Africa's only castles, and Lalibela-home to 11 rock-hewn churches.

Ethiopia's population is highly diverse with more than 80 different ethnic groups. Semitic-speaking Ethiopians collectively refer to themselves as Abesha or Habesha, from which the former name of Ethiopia "Abyssinia" is derived.
