About Madagascar
Madagascar has diverse landscape of lowlands and tropical rainforests in the east, protected harbors in the west, central highlands, volcanic mountains and tropical rainforest in the north and a desert region in the southwest.
Because of its isolation Madagascar has a great diversity of wildlife not found anywhere else on the planet, with 3000 endemic species of butterfly, many racoons, lemurs, marmots, bushbabies, sloths, reptiles, amphibians and birds. It is home to the largest cameleons in the world. Ranomafana National Park is one of the national parks, famous for its lemur spotting and hot springs. Other national parks and nature reserves are the Montagne d'Ambre National Park up north, the Masoala National Park with steep and slippery hikes, the Nosy Mangabe Special Reserve on an island that can be reached by boat, and the popular Andasibe-Mantadia National Park. The Berenty Private Reserve is the most famous reserve of Madagascar and can be travelled without a guide. The Andringitra National Park around Pic Boby (2658m) offers great trekking opprtunities with beautifull sights.
Madagascar still lacks a good infrastructure, something travellers should plan for.
