Afghanistan is a very mountainous country, with Nowshak as the highest point at 7485 m. The country has suffered from chronic conflict during its modern history and as a result the economy and infrastructure are in ruins, and many of its people are refugees. Tourists are not particularly welcome.

Afghanistan's economy depends for 60% on drugs and the country is the world's leading producer of opium. Many of the country's historic monuments have been damaged in the wars in recent years. The two famous statues of Buddha in the Bamiyan Province were destroyed by the Taliban.
