East Timor is a part of the Indonesian archipelago and South-East Asia's newest nation, after Indonesia relinquished control in May 2002. The island is mountainous with Mount Tatamailau at 2,963 m as the highest point, has a lush interior and many fine beaches.
The capital, largest city and main port of East Timor is Dili which was founded about 1520 by the Portuguese.
