About Japan
The ''Land of the Rising Sun'' consists of an island archipelago with over 3,000 islands that are mountainous in the interior. The largest and main islands are, from north to south, Hokkaido, Honshu (the largest island), Shikoku and Kyushu.
Most of the people live tightly packed in the coastal plains and fewer than 25% of Japan's people live in rural areas. Twenty percent of the world's earthquakes take place in Japan, which sits on the boundaries of at least three tectonic plates and the countryside is riddled with hundreds of volcanoes and hot springs overlooking pastoral paddy fields.
Japan also is the home the most modern cities like Tokyo, Osaka, Sapporo and Kyoto. Between the neon signs and the skyscrapers you will also find tradional pagodas and shrines.
