About Kazakhstan
Kazakhstan is a huge and beautifull country the size of Western Europe, with diverse landscape made up of mountainous, heavily populated regions in the east, sparsely populated lowlands on the western Caspian Sea, industrialized regions in the West Siberian north to empy steppes in the centre, and fertile lands in the south.
Astana is the capital since 1998, when it replaced Almaty or Alma-Ata as it was formerly known. From Almaty you can make excursions into the mountains or visit the famous outdoor skating ring.
Some of the regions in Kazakhstan unfortunately are still heavily poluted as a result of nuclear testing and toxic waste during the Soviet-era, with cities like Semey (formerly Semipalatinsk) still posing health risks for humans and animals.

The original people of Kazakhstan or Kazakhs, are a mix of Turkic and Mongol nomadic tribes. The nomadic culture of the Kazakhs is preserved in a rich folklore with many traditions.
