About Laos
Laos is a mountainous country covered largely by tropical rainforest. Actually less then 5% of the land is suitable for agriculture. The highest peak is Phou Bia at 2,817 m. The Mekong River is the life-line of Laos and runs for a large part on the western boundary with Thailand. A number of new animal species have been discovered or re-discovered in Laos in recent years. These include the striped or Annamite rabbit, the saola and the Laotian rock rat.
The capital and largest city of Laos is Vientiane, however most tourists head for Louang Phabang with its many gilded temples.

Lao culture is greatly influenced by Theravan Buddhism. People are very friendly and hospitable. Laos today is one of the world's few remaining communist states.
