About Mongolia

The Mongolian heartland consists of relatively flat steppes, with in the south the famous Gobi Desert. The northern and western parts are mountainous, with the Uvs Nuur Lake, which is a natural World Heritage Site as the only remainder of a huge saline sea which once covered a much larger area. The Uvs Nuur basin is home to many bird species and mammals, including the globally endangered snow leopard, argali and Asiatic ibex. Travellers that are willing to cope with the extreme temperatures on horse back treks with camping in the traditional tents, will find Mongolia's rough scenery and wildlife a true sensation.

The capital of Mongolia is Ulaanbaatar, with over one third of the national population living in the city (most Mongols are actually living in China). A few traditionally Buddhist monasteries can still be admired that survived the masive destruction in the 1930's.
