Ulaanbataar is the capital of Mongolia, situated in the north central part of Mongolia, on the Tuul River, in a valley at the foot of the mountain Bogda Uul. With pine-covered mountains surrounding Ulaanbataar, it is a city with a rustic charm.

  • The forests to the north of Ulaanbaatar offer many ski trails during winter(-10 to -15°C)
  • 10 km outside Ulaanbaatar lies the protected area of Bogdkhan, offering endless hiking opportunities
  • 60 km from Ulaanbaatar in the Hentii Mountains (2800 m), the area near Terelj in Terelj National Park is popular destination with forested valleys and wildlife such as elk, brown bear, wolf and lynx.
  • Manchirhiid a ruined large monastery (Mongolia was one of the strongest Lamaist countries in the world before the communists destruction)
  • Hustain Huruu Natural Reserve (100 km southwest of Ulaanbaatar) home to herds of Przjevalski horses
  • Amarbayasgalant Monastery-one of the few monasteries in Mongolia that survived the purges of the 1930s
  • Eagle hunting on horse is getting rare, but there are still some hunters who keep eagles

  • Train: The Trans Mongolia Railway is a truly great journey. This line leaves the Trans Siberia at Ulan Ude, and heads south through Ulaanbaatar and the Gobi to Beijing. There is a choice between a Chinese, Mongolian, and a Russian train from Ulaanbaar to Moscow.
