About Tibet
'Roof of the World', with an average elevation of 4,900 m, as Tibet is often called, with most of the Himalaya mountain ranges in Tibet with the famous peak Mount Everest on the border with Nepal. It offers fabulous sights, breathtaking high-altitude treks and stunning views of the world's highest mountains. The atmosphere is severely dry nine months of the year with wind sweeping across vast and arid plains. Western passes remain traversable year round. Several majors rivers have their source in the Tibetan Plateau including the Yangtze, Huang He, Indus River, Mekong, Brahmaputra and the Ganges.
Tibet is perhaps most known as the mysterious Buddhist holy place that was hidden from the outside world for thousands of years. Lhasa is Tibet's traditional capital with its famous Potala Place, the former residence of the Dalai Lamas guarded by its Large Snow Lions. It is on the World heritage list and remains one of the few historically significant sites in Tibet.
