90% Turkmenistan is covered by the Karakum Desert and consists mostly of flatlands. The capital, Ashgabat, on the southern rim of the Kara-Kum Desert, is a modern city and one of the best place to buy Turkmen carpets. Mary or as it was once known-the old city of Merv - is worth while a visit, with ruins of the old Persian fortresses like Erk Kala, Gyaur Kala and Sultan Kala, which were on the Silk road visited by many caravans.
