About El Salvador
El Salvador is a country with much natural beauty and known as the land of the volcanoes, with some 25 volcanoes three of which – the Izalco, San Miguel and Santa Ana – are still active. El Salvador is mostly mountainous with many rivers and ravines, a narrow coastal belt with marshes and beaches and the central volcanic plateau.
Tourism in El Salvador is not really developed and although visitors can be deterred by the country's reputation for violence, the country has many interesting destinations to offer, like the village of Joya de Ceren, a major Mayan archeological site that was buried under volcanic ash 1400 years ago, which today is on the Heritage for Humanity list of Unesco.
