About Virgin Islands (US)
The U.S. Virgin Islands are made up of the four main islands St.Thomas, St.John, St. Croix (the largest) and Water Island and douzens of smaller islands, all known for their white sandy beaches. The islands lie on the boundary of the North Americain and the Caribbean plate and are exposed to earthquakes. Most islands are volcanic in origin and hilly. Surrounded by the crystal-clear Caribbean waters, the islands have some of the most splendid diving waters in the world with astonishing coral reefs, secluded coves and a rich marine life.
Charlotte Amalie is the capital, located on St. Thomas with a deep water harbor that is visited yearly by millions of cruise ship passengers. With its luxury resorts, fine hotels and old colonial architecture Charlotte Amalia is a prime tourist destination in the Caribbean. The islands are the only U.S. territory where traffic drives on the left.
