Belarus is covered largely by forests, swamps and some 11,000 lakes. It has extensive deposits of granite, dolomitic limestone, marl, chalk, sand, gravel, and clay. The country is crossed by major rivers such as the Dnieper and has a rich wildlive.

In early 2005, Belarus was listed by the US as Europe's only remaining outpost of tyranny. It is one of the few countries of the former Soviet Union with Lenin still standing and the sickle and hammer symbol in abundance.
