About Rome

All roads lead to Rome. This thousand years old city on the river Tiber, not only is the capital of Italy, it also holds the Holy See of the papacy. Rome is the city of sculptures like Michelangelo's famous Moses, of beautiful fountains like the Fontana di Trevi, of splendid piazza’s, palaces and villas like Villa Borghese, fabulous museums and buildings like the Vatican museum and the Sistine Chapel, and the world famous Colloseum. Visitors should not miss the opportunity to view of the city from one of the scenic view-points like the St. Peter's dome or the Janiculum, the Pincio, the Aventino from where you can see the whole city.

Highlights in the vicinity

  • Just north of Rome ly the ancient Necroplis of Cerveteri and Tarquina. Cerveti with its mace of narrow streets and tombs from the Etrusk's, was THE place to be in 600 BC. Today the Necropli still testify of its former impressive cultural and econmical wealth.

  • Train station: Stazioni Termini This is the principal railway station of Rome, as well as the cross roads of all public transportation in Rome. The railway platform has been in use since 1864, but the current building which houses it was inaugurated in the Holy Year of 1950. The architecture is characterized by the extremely long, modernist facade in travertine stone, and by the gravity-defying double curve of the roof.

Inbound transport

  • Air: Airport Leonardo da Vinci, generally known as Fiumicino, is located 26 km southwest of the city. Rome's other airport is Ciampino about 20km  southeast of the city and is used by the majority of charter flights.There are direct train connections into town (Stazione Termini) which is the most comfortable and cheap way (it is advised to avoid the expensive taxis)
  • Car: 4 highways lead to the urban ring road. Highway informations you can get at 'Società Autostrade', tel. +39/6/43632121
  • Train: Rome's main railroad station is Stazione centrale Roma termini. It is situated east of the historic city centre with easy walks to Santa Maria Maggiore, San Pietro in Vincoli, Piazza Vittorio, Colosseo or Museo Nazionale Romano.
