Macedonia is covered with rugged terrain, with the Sar and Rhodope mountains with Golem Korab (Maja e Korabit) at 2,764 m as the highest peak, deep valleys and large lakes. The country is seismically active and has been subject to destructive earthquakes in the past, most recently in Skopje, its capital.
