About Moldova
Moldova has become an independent republic since the fall of the former Sovjet Union. Russian forces have remained on Moldovan territory east of the Dniester River supporting the Slavic majority population, mostly Ukrainians and Russians, who have proclaimed a "Transnistria" republic. Moldova is the poorest nation in Europe. It was badly damaged during World War II with two thirds of the larger cities destroyed.
