Beirut is the capital of Lebanon. Against the Mount Lebanon mountains, Beirut is situated on a narrow coastal plain of the Mediterranean Sea. The cosmopolitan city used to be called "the Paris of the Middle East" and has undergone major reconstruction in recent years to regain its former position.
