About Syria
Syria consists mostly of semiarid and desert plateau, with a narrow fertile coastal plain. The Euphrates, Syria's most important river, crosses the country in the east. Its landscapes are considered of the most beautiful in the world and the country is packed with the ruins and monuments of almost all civilizations that passed through here.
Major cities include the capital Damascus in the southwest and Aleppo in the north. Palmyra is a famous destination for travellers that are interested in ancient cultures. Once a big city, were east met west, today consists of ruins and is best known for its Valley of Tombs.
