Alabama is a Southern state of the United States with gentle plains declining towards the Mississippi River and the coast on the Gulf of Mexico. The North Alabama region is mountainous, with the Tennessee River cutting a large valley and numerous creeks, streams, rivers, mountains, and lakes. Alabama is known for the African American's struggles for equality. Key civil rights historical locations can be found throughout the state.

Getting Around

  • If you are in a hurry take the Interstate Highways: I-65 runs north-south; I-59/I-20 from the central west border to the north-east and I-85 from the border of Georgia to Montgomery.
  • If not try some of the Alabama scenic byways
    • Natchez Trace Parkway-the Alabama section of the Natchez Trace Parkway is a short 50 km road that takes you to the top of Freedom Hills, to striking views at the Tennessee River crossing and passes a wealth of early pioneer and Native American history.
    • Selma to Montgomery March Byway-this All-American Road takes you through the gentle rolling hills of Lowndes County to Montgomery. However this byway is best known for the historic Selma to Montgomery Marches with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. You can visit the First Baptist Church and Brown Chapel that housed the civil rights movements in Dallas County, visit the National Voting Rights Museum and Institute in Selma, and walk on the steps of the capitol in Montgomery, where King delivered his speech "How Long, Not Long".
    • Talladega Scenic Drive-taking you to Cheaha Mountain, the highest point in Alabama with awesome views of the Appalachian Mountains. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Talladega National Forest with its many opportunities to camp and hike along the trails of the Cheaha Wilderness or the Pinhoti National Recreation Trail.
