About Missouri

Missouri is considered part of the Midwest, although the state where Mark Twain grew up, is sometimes considered to be part of the South, especially in the rural southern, where you will find cotton and rice production areas (i.e. Cape Girardeau and Springfield). The Ozark National Scenic Riverways is perhaps the best known and most scenic part of Missouri. With More than 6000 documented caves Missouri is also called the Cave State.

  • Lake of the Ozarks State Park, with rugged, wooded areas, cave formations with  stalactites, waterfalls and more than 125 km of lake frontage. Ha Ha Tonka State Park overlooks the Lake of the Ozarks from atop towering limestone bluffs. In the Bonne Terre Mine at the foothills is the world's largest fresh water dive resort.
  • Harry S Truman State Park with the Truman Lake, offering some of the best hunting and fishing in Missouri.
  • The Mark Twain National Forest lies almost entirely within the Ozark Plateau and is the only National Forest in Missouri.
  • Pomme de Terre Lake-80 km from Springfield, named the "Gem of the Ozarks," offers good camping, canoeing, fishing and hiking opportunities.

Getting Around

  • Try the Mississippi River Queen Boat (an authentic steamboat) -a perfect way to explore the great historical rivers in Missouri.
  • The Katy Trail-a 360 km long bicycle trail along the former corridor of the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. It offers scenic views and access to rural towns from St. Charles to Clinton.
  • The Ozark Trail by bike or horseback from the St. Louis through Arkansas in an almost 900 km stretch of which nearly 550 km in Missouri.
  • Route 66: the most famous stretch of road in the USA passes through Missouri
  • Scenic Drives
    • Highway 106 runs east/west from Ellington along Deer Run State Forest through the Ozark National Scenic Riverways to Summersville.
    • The legendary Great River Road through north and southeast Missouri. along the banks of the Mississippi River taking you to towns as Clarksville, Louisiana and Hannibal.
    • Highway 94 (Missouri's Weinstrasse) leads you through wine-country
    • An Ancient Rocks drive along Highways 8 and 21 through the heart of the St. Francois Mountains to Taum Sauk Mountain, the highest point in Missouri.
