About New Hampshire

New Hampshire is a U.S. state located in New England, bordering Quebec, Canada, and the Atlantic Ocean in the east. The White Mountains range in the north-central portion of the state, with Mount Washington as the tallest mountain, has hurricane-force winds in the upper part every third day resulting in the "worst weather on earth". Southwest New Hampshire with Mount Monadnock is known for monadnock’s or inselbergs. The largest lake is Lake Winnipesaukee, which covers 186 km² in the east-central part of New Hampshire. New Hampshire is the second-most-forested state in the USA with 1,300 lakes and ponds.

Getting Around

  • If you are in a hurry take the Interstate Highways: I-89 and I-93
  • If not try some of the New Hampshire scenic byways
    • Connecticut River Byway-the Upper Connecticut River Valley provides a panorama of scenic vistas with many historic sites. North of White River the byway takes you through pristine villages, set against the backdrops of the White and Green Mountains and the Connecticut River.
    • Kancamagus Scenic Byway- takes you through New Hampshire's White Mountains with one of the world's most spectacular fall-foliage. Lost River Gorge, Franconia Notch State Park and Attitash Bear Peak, New Hampshire's largest ski resort, are popular destinations.
    • White Mountain Trail-with uninterrupted mountain and river views, wetlands and woodlands. You have plenty of outdoor opportunities under the granite cliffs and soaring mountains like hiking, fishing, mountain biking, and downhill and cross-country skiing.
    • Branch River Valley Trail-takes you through a rolling landscape with 273 lakes and ponds
    • Coastal Byway runs along New Hampshire's only coastline with brilliant panoramas of the Atlantic Ocean and its sandy beaches
    • Lakes Region Tour  circles Lake Winnipesaukee, the largest and most scenic lake in New Hampshire
    • Moose Path Trail takes you through the Great North Woods Region, a true wilderness with moose and deer, and great hiking and camping opportunities for the outdoors enthusiast's. See Pontook a favorite among canoeists, kayakers, and rafters. Or Dixville Notch State Park with its waterfalls.
    • Woodland Heritage Trail through the northernmost section of the White Mountain National Forest (the Kilkenny District), crammed with lakes and recreational opportunities.
