About New York

New York is a state in the north-eastern United States, also called New York State (as opposed to New York City). New York is often regionalized into Upstate and Downstate New York. Upstate is north of the New York City metropolitan area with the Great Lakes region, Adirondack Mountains and the Finger Lakes. Downstate New York includes New York City, its suburbs, and the southern portion of the Hudson Valley. Most people identify New York with New York City and the Manhattan skyscrapers. However the rest of the state is dominated by farms, forests, rivers, mountains and lakes with such excellent parks as Adirondack State Park which is larger than any National Park in the U.S. outside of Alaska. Or think Niagara Falls and the Niagara River as it flows from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. East of Manhattan extends Long Island, stretching approximately 190 km from Kings and Queens Counties to Orient and Montauk Points in the rural "East End" of the Island.
