About Heard and McDonald Islands
Heard Island and McDonald Islands or HIMI, are isolated and uninhabited sub-Antarctic islands in the Indian Ocean about two-thirds of the way from Madagascar to Antarctica. Heard Island is covered in glaciers and dominated by Mawson Peak, a 2745 m high active volcano. McDonald Islands are small and rocky and located 44 km to the west of Heard Island. The islands are populated by large numbers of seal, penguins and other bird species, and have been designated a nature preserve.
