Tasmania is a natural island 240 km south of  mainland Australia with dramatic coastlines and rugged mountains. It is encircled by the Southern Ocean, Tasman Sea and the Bass Strait and is known for its clean air. It is a place of wild and beautiful landscapes with a network of 18 national parks and 1.38 million hectares of Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area with its unique wildlife.

Highlights

  • Cradle Mountain (1,545 m)-Lake St Clair National Park with rainforest, cascading streams and glacial lakes. There are excellent tracks and bushwalking opportunities in “The Cradle”
  • Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, in the Wilderness World Heritage Area of the south-west, where you find great rafting opportunities in the rapids
  • The Tahune Airwalk, 45 m in the air and half a km long on steel towers, surrounded by forests, above the Huon and Picton rivers, with birds-eye view of the southern forests, the local mountain range and the Tasmanian World Heritage Area. Nearby you will find the Huon Pine trail that takes you past 200 to more than a thousand year old Huon pines.
  • Hastings Caves-the great 40 million year old dolomite caves with Newdegate Cave as the largest tourist cave in Australia
  • Mole Creek Karst National Park with more than 200 caves
  • Flinders Island off the northeast tip of Tasmania, an island of dramatic landscapes and a vast array of wildlife. See the granite cliffs of Strzelecki National Park.
  • King Island off the north-west tip has thriving wildlife, wetland bird habitat and ancient calcified forest
  • Port Arthur Historic Site with its historic sandstone prison
  • Cataract Gorge Reserve northern Tasmania's premier tourist attraction
  • Dismal Swamp with its giant sinkhole, 40 m descend from the visitors centre, filled with ancient Blackwood trees.
  • Wineglass Bay and Freycinet National Park, with the beautiful white sand bay and pink and grey granite walls.

Getting Around

  • Car:
    • Enjoy the 21 km drive from Hobart to the summit of Mt Wellington (1270 m) with panoramic views of Hobart, Bruny Island, South Arm and the Tasman Peninsula at the top.
    • The Huon Trail from Hobart to the Huon Valley along the meandering coastline. The trail takes you to the Arve and Tahune Forests and the Tahune Air Walk and on to Cockle Creek in the far south the entry to Tasmania's South West National Park(World Heritage Area)
    • If you are into wines try the  Tamar Valley Wine Route
  • Train: West Coast Wilderness Railway- the 19th century 35 km railway  trip through rugged wilderness, dense rainforest and steep gorges
  • Trails: Overland track (65 km) offers a 6 day adventure through the heart of the Cradle Mountain–Lake St Clair National
