About Tarawa
Tarawa is the capital of the Republic of Kiribati. It is not a single town but a group of islets surrounded by a coral atoll in the central Pacific Ocean. Of the 24 larger islets, 8 at least are inhabited. South Tarawa is the largest islet with the largest town, Bikenibeu. Betio islet is the most popular in Kiribati with its port, shipyard and is famous for the Battle of Tarawa during World War II.
