About Wallis and Futuna
Wallis and Futuna are a group of mainly three volcanic islands first discovered by the Dutch and the British in the 17th and 18th centuries. It was the French who declared a protectorate over the islands in 1842, and today the islands are a French overseas territory. The island of Alofi is uninhabitaed as its population was reportedly eaten by the cannibal people of Futuna in the 19th century. Many lakes such as the spectacular Lake Lalolalo are found in the ancient volcanos. The lagoons of Wallis and Alofi have an exquisite marine life with multi-colored fish, rays, tortoises and dolphins.
