About Ecuador

Situated on the equator, Ecuador is the smallest country in the Andean Highlands, with three different regions on the mainland, plus the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific, about 965 km west of the mainland. It offers many hiking possibilities as well as the chance to get to know the Amazon region. The first region is the coastal part with many mangroves and on the southern some beautiful beaches. The central region of Ecuador with the high Andes Mountains has many volcanoes and mountain peaks with year-round snow. The northern Ecuadorian Andes region with Quito the capital of Ecuador located on the foot of the Pinchata (4,784 m) volcano. And the eastern region with its moist tropical forest descending into the Amazon basin is sparsely populated.

The historical center of Quito is worth while a visit being one of the first cultural sites on the Unesco World Heritage list. It has many beautifull plazas and baroque churches, including the Cathedral, built in the colonial era by the Spaniards. There are many museums dedicated to colonial art and history like the City Museum, the Metropolitan Cultural Center and the museum of the Convent of St. Francis.
