About Suriname
Suriname can be divided into two main geographic regions. The northern, lowland coastal area andt he southern part that consists of tropical rainforest and sparsely inhabited savanna along the border with Brazil. There are two main mountain ranges in Suriname: the Bakhuil Mountains and the Van Asch Van Wijck Mountains, and many national parks of which the Central Suriname Nature Reserve in the upper Coppename River is on the UNESCO World heritage list.
The vast majority of people live on the coast or in Paramaribo(population of 250,000), which has some attractive wooden architecture reminding of the Dutch colonialism. Paramaribo is centred around the Onafhankelijkheidsplein, with its Presidential Palace and the National Assembly. Interesting to visit is Fort Zeelandia dating back to the 17th century.
